Our mission at the Zuckerman Institute is bold and urgent: to decipher the brain. A better understanding of this extraordinary organ and how it gives rise to mind and behavior will lead to insights that could benefit our health and our society—from treatments and cures for debilitating brain-related disorders that might affect you, or someone you love, to discoveries that could impact public policy. Our motto is The Future in Mind, and we are proud to be the home of the next generation of researchers pushing the boundaries of neuroscience, from molecules to mind.

THE FUTURE IN MIND INITIATIVE
Our goal on this Columbia Giving Day is to raise both immediate-use and endowed funds to directly support early-career scientists. As a core foundation of our scientific community, our trainees provide fresh perspectives that energize our work. In turn, they benefit from an outstanding research environment, including a rich array of seminars and conferences. They can also take advantage of targeted development programming that advances and supports their professional growth—gaining key knowledge to start their own future labs and carry forward all the best principles and practices they learned with us.
WHY IS THIS URGENT?
Early-career scientists are the most vulnerable to shifts and uncertainty in federal research funding in today's challenging, rapidly changing world. Many have already been forced to reconsider their futures and the viability of their career path. We cannot afford to lose these talented scientists and disrupt the exchange of knowledge and ideas from one generation to the next. We cannot afford to halt scientific progress.
